About Taiwan
- Lay of the land: The majority of Taiwan’s 23 million people (and all HESS schools!) are located on the main island. Jagged mountains down the center of the island separate the highly-urbanized cities on the west coast from the small towns and beaches of the east coast. Taiwan is sub-tropical in the north and tropical in the south, with warm, humid, and sometimes rainy weather throughout the year. Excellent transportation links connect you to every corner of Taiwan, its outlying islands, and destinations across East and Southeast Asia.
- Famous for: Open society, friendly people, safety, delicious night market food, excellent hiking and biking, hot and cold springs, fascinating history, unique cultural offerings, and so much more
- Languages: Mandarin is the common language, and many of our teachers learn some Mandarin during their time in Taiwan. Taiwanese, Hakka, and indigenous languages are also spoken here.
